Loire Villages and towns around Montrichard
There are many towns and villages of interest in the Loire Valley and many exceptional Châteaux. Below we have given brief examples of these with some relevant links where appropriate: Chenonceau (10 km) Arguably Chenonceau has the finest Château of them all - Château de Chenonceau! Stretching romantically across the Cher and surrounded by formal gardens this is great area for a day out and a picnic...a must for all!
Montpoupon (11 km) Just South of the town this area has an impressive building which is almost hidden when visiting from the North. There is a pretty little Auberge nearby that looks inviting, please try it and tell us what you think!
St. Aignan (17 km) This Château overlooks the river Cher as it flows around the town. A strange English pastime seems to have crept it's way into this village..."mini" golf! With a course on the left just before you cross the river from the North. Follow the south bank of the river Cher in an easterly direction for 3 km to Seigy to find a great brocante shop!
Amboise (18 km) - Click Here A beautiful town with a royal château. This is most impressive from the north of the river Loire. We recommend a whole day in this lovely town which is both picturesque and full of history (Leonardo Da Vinci made his last home here in le Manoir du Clos Luce).
Chaumont sur Loire (18 km) Again, this chateau is best viewed from the north of the Loire. The garden is said to be laid out like in an English country garden style. Also for those sporting types there is a new golf course which can be found just across the river (direction Blois!)
Cherverny (30 km) - Click Here Built in the 17th Century of local white tuffeaux stone, this chateaux has a classical facade and is superbly located at the heart of the great Cheverny wine region.
Loches (31 km) On the banks of the river Indre, Loches contains many medieval streets and picturesque houses towered over by the 11th Century keep.
Blois (34 km) Blois was home to many kings over the centuries and is the feudal seat of the count de Blois. The town is now capital town of the Loir et Cher department and boasts a magnificent chateaux which is steeped in history.
Tours (37 km) Tours is a rambling medieval town and the capital of the Indre et Loire department (No. 37). Being largest town in the area it contains lots of things to do for all ages!! We highly recommend getting the train from Montrichard for a full day out shopping and drinking in the hidden medieval side streets! Tours also has antiques markets twice a week and other French markets throughout the streets. Star sights for this town are the La Place Plumereau and Maison de Tristan. The TGV stops just outside the main station at St. Pierre de Corps and is a valuable link to Paris (1 hour) and the south.
